In 1837 an educationist Friedrich Froebel changed the way young children were taught by opening the first Kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany. Based on his experience and inspiration, he gave the world the Kindergarten (children’s garden) approach. Instead, what people the world over did was that they changed it to suit their personal agenda. Clubbed with rapid colonisation of the times, it reduced Kindergarten to KG where young children were set out to learn ABCs and one to 10 and ‘English’ nursery rhymes - in an almost-factory like setup.
There has been enough research to discuss the importance of brain development in early years and that is why it is imperative that we go back to to the basics and start where it all began with play based learning for children. This book takes us through the life and times of Fredrich Froebel and how he revolutionised it with gifts and occupations, ambidextrous activities, mother songs, and nature based learning. Through it, we discuss teacher education, parent empowerment, women in education and STEAM and coding in his own methodology. Most importantly, this book helps you understand the Froebel approach in today’s times to make learning come full circle with forms of life, forms of beauty and forms of knowledge.
Authored by pedagogista, kindergartener and educational changemaker Dr. Swati Popat Vats and journalist, editor and mother Nasrin Modak Siddiqi, this book is a must read for academicians and parents alike. In disruptive times like now - especially in the field of education, -the book is an ideal start to be the change we want to see.
