Born on 12 January 1863 into an affluent Bengali family in Calcutta, Narendranath Dutta, was one of eight children of Vishwanath Dutta and Bhuvaneshwari Devi.
Narendranath questioned the existence of God, leaning towards Agnosticism for a while. He also associated with the Brahmo Samaj movement and founded the Ramakrishna Mission to spread education and work for the uplift of the marginalised.
On 11 September 1893, at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda stunned everyone with his opening line: “Sisters and brothers of America...” He described the principles of Vedanta and their spiritual significance, putting Hinduism on the map of World Religions.
He spent the rest of his life in India, inspiring and guiding people.
