The author's intensely felt theme and his invention of dramatic details make this brief piece of fiction high-spirited and entertaining.Riveting.Brilliant.'Hughes combines the same freshness, metaphorical sweep and surprising precision of language that exists in his adult poetry. Tremendous.'Ted Hughes, one of the greatest of poets, took his writing for children no less seriously. His aim was an exalted one: to strengthen the minds of his young readers against the difficulties and terrors of the world. From his capacious imagination, he produced tales like magic spells, both amazing and uplifting. His words have healing properties.I remember hearing Hughes's poem "Lineage" for the first time when I was ten years old. It blew my head wide open: I had no idea that words could do that, that poems could sound like that, that they were allowed to. THE IRON MAN is a perfect example of the power a simple vocabulary can achieve in the right hands: it is instant, physical, blistering and strange. That's the reason children still read it, year after year.So much of Hughes' poetry is imbued with the magic of spontaneity and the present moment - what Hughes himself called 'the spirit of the snowflake in the water of the river'. In the best of his poems for children, he combines the same freshness, relish for sound and broad metaphorical sweep that exists in his adult poetry. The imaginative impact of his words is as deliberate as it is lasting, born of a conviction that 'what alters the imagination, alters everything.Stunning illustrations by Chris Mould make this one of the most exciting editions of The Iron Man to be published.
The Iron Man came to the top of the cliff.
Where had he come from? Nobody knows.
How was he made? Nobody knows.
Mankind must put a stop to the dreadful destruction by the Iron Man and set a trap for him, but he cannot be kept down. Then, when a terrible monster from outer space threatens to lay waste to the planet, it is the Iron Man who finds a way to save the world.
