Product Description

When Sjoerd Marijne was appointed the chief coach of the Indian women's team in 2017, India were laggards in world hockey, and the players were treated as second-class citizens. Four-and-a-half years later--despite his see-sawing stint as the coach--Marijne turned the team's fortunes around and made them a force to be reckoned with, globally.

With the refreshing candour of an outsider, the Dutchman takes a deep dive into the dark side of Indian sports-hockey, in particular-and reveals how bureaucracy, sexism, favouritism and the players' struggles with poverty, mental and physical health, affect the team. He also writes about dealing with setbacks, building team chemistry, creating a high-performance culture and harbouring a winning mentality.

Will Power is a moving tale about a team with zero self-belief, and its quest to rise from the pits and go head-to-head against some of the best teams in the world in the greatest sporting event of all-the Olympics.

'Indian hockey as rarely seen-truthful, brutal, but also filled with love, appreciation and hope.'--Sharda Ugra, sports journalist and author

'Dutch hockey coach Sjoerd Marijne became a household name after the Indian women's team's stirring performance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, reaching unimagined benchmarks for ambition and performance. In his memoirs, the Dutchman gives us vignettes of his multidimensional life in all its hues, with obviously a lot of space devoted to his stints in India. The approach of the book is offbeat, the tenor candid, the anecdotes and analyses riveting, bringing the reader up close and personal with the minds and methods of one of the most compelling figures in contemporary hockey. Will Power is not just an engaging read, it's also an important addition to sports literature in India.' --Ayaz Memon, sports journalist, commentator and author

'A fly-on-the-wall account that gives a glimpse into a team's psyche, provides an honest assessment of Indian hockey, and asks tough questions about the Indian sporting system. A compelling read.'-- Pradeep Magazine, columnist and former sports editor, The Pioneer, The Hindustan Times, India Today e-paper

About Author

Sjoerd Marijne is a Dutch hockey player and coach. He led the Netherlands' under-21 women's hockey team to a World Cup title and then became the coach of the Dutch senior women's team, which is ranked number one in the world. Between 2011 and 2014, Marijne was also the head coach of the Netherlands under-21 men's team and later had a short stint in China, coaching the men's team in provincial Liaoning. He was appointed the chief coach of the Indian women's national team in 2017 and, after a brief period of success, he was given charge of the men's team in September that year. In May 2018, he was made the coach of the women's team once again and he guided the team to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.
