Lessons in Chemistry has everything I could want in a novel. An unforgettable protagonist, sharp and funny writing, emotional depth, a vivid setting, and ideas that matter. Elizabeth Zott is the kind of fictional character who feels real enough to be a friend. The novel made me think about gender and intelligence and ambition in fresh ways while also just being an incredible story. I have gifted this to five people already. Bonnie Garmus is a remarkable writer. Essential reading.

Lessons in Chemistry is the rare novel that is both genuinely funny and genuinely moving. Elizabeth Zott made me laugh on almost every page and yet her struggles and losses are written with real emotional weight. Garmus clearly has deep affection for her protagonist and that love comes through in every scene. The 1960s setting is vividly rendered and the feminist themes feel neither preachy nor dated. A brilliant, warm, and thoroughly satisfying novel. Five stars.

What distinguishes Lessons in Chemistry is how warmly and specifically it celebrates female intelligence and the ways that intelligence finds expression even when directly suppressed. Elizabeth's insistence on treating cooking as chemistry is both funny and politically meaningful. Garmus writes with real skill, balancing comedy and pathos beautifully. The supporting characters, particularly Six-Thirty the dog, are wonderfully drawn. A genuinely delightful and quietly radical novel. Highly recommended to everyone.

I started Lessons in Chemistry on a lazy Sunday and finished it late that night. The story of a female chemist in the 1960s who becomes a cooking show host is so much more than its premise suggests. Garmus writes with warmth and sharp wit and the themes about women's intelligence, ambition, and worth feel both historically specific and completely contemporary. Elizabeth Zott is one of my favourite fictional characters. This book made me laugh, cry, and cheer. Absolutely loved it.

Lessons in Chemistry is one of the most purely enjoyable novels I have read in years. Elizabeth Zott is an extraordinary protagonist, brilliant, unconventional, and fiercely herself. Bonnie Garmus writes with wit and intelligence and the novel manages to be both funny and genuinely moving about the challenges women face in male-dominated spaces. The relationship between Elizabeth and Calvin is beautifully drawn. I finished this grinning from ear to ear. An absolute gem of a novel.
