Product Description

Smritichitre: The Memoirs Of A Spirited Wife invites readers into the intimate life of Lakshmi Bai Tilak, a candid Marathi memoir that traces a woman's journey from a strict Maharashtrian upbringing near Nashik to a life shaped by love, resilience, and a fierce sense of social conscience. A historical biography written for adults and readers who enjoy character-led stories, it blends warmth with insight, offering an emotional, educational, and occasionally lighthearted look at marriage, class, caste, and faith in late 19th- and early 20th-century India.

Smritichitre is written as a candid, engaging memoir that unfolds through real episodes—marital clashes, financial hardship, moments of joy, and hard-won reflections on identity and duty. The English translation by Shanta Gokhale preserves Lakshmi Bai Tilak's direct voice, balancing sharp humor with honesty and empathy. The narrative moves with a steady pace, offering vivid scenes, intimate conversations, and a sense of actually being with the author as she navigates love, loss, and growth.

Beyond the family circle, the book probes broader questions of caste, religion, and women's autonomy. It traces how personal choices—such as her husband's religious conversion, their separation, and her own evolving beliefs—play out against a backdrop of tradition and reform. Yet at its heart is a celebration of resilience, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to the welfare of others, making the memoir feel both timely and timeless.
