Book Summary
Speaking Of History: Conversations About India’S Past And Present Brings India’S Rich Past Into Sharp, Urgent Focus Through A Candid Exchange Between Renowned Historian Romila Thapar And Incisive Writer Namit Arora. This Non-Fiction Inquiry Invites Readers Into How History Is Crafted, Remembered, And Often Contested In Modern Discourse. It’S Ideal For Curious Readers Of All Ages Who Want To Understand Not Just What Happened, But How That History Matters Today. The Tone Is Thoughtful, Rigorous, And Approachable — Inspiring Further Questions Rather Than Offering Neat Answers.
In These Conversations, The Book Is Written As A Living Dialogue Rather Than A Traditional Monograph. Short Chapters Unfold Around Questions Like How We Weigh Evidence, How Interpretations Are Formed, And How Politics And Identity Shape What Counts As History. The Experience Is Engaging Because The Authors Model Careful Argument, Friendly Disagreement, And Lucid Explanation, Making Dense Ideas Accessible Without Dumbing Them Down. The Content Is Presented As A Balance Of Scholarly Rigor And Human Curiosity, With Discussions Of Caste, Gender, Religion, Mythology, And Nationalism That Illuminate Both Past And Present.
After Finishing Speaking Of History, Readers Gain A Sharper Sense Of How The Past Is Built, Contested, And Used In The Present — And A Confidence To Engage In Historical Conversations With Curiosity, Care, And Critical Eye.

History books can be dry. This one absolutely isn't. Namit Arora writes with the energy of a great storyteller and the rigour of a serious scholar, and the combination is irresistible. I came away feeling like I genuinely understood something important that I had only vaguely grasped before. Outstanding.
I approached this not knowing much about the subject and finished it feeling like I had a genuine, solid understanding of something that really matters. Namit Arora has a rare talent for making complexity accessible without ever being reductive. Brilliant, important and beautifully written.
I've recommended this to everyone in my reading group because it's exactly the kind of non-fiction that changes how you see the world. Namit Arora's analysis is sharp, the prose is elegant, and the research is clearly impeccable. One of the most rewarding books I've read in recent years.
Speaking of History: Conversations About India’s Past and Present is ambitious in the best way — it takes on a huge subject and handles it with real intelligence and clarity. Namit Arora never loses the thread even when the material is complex, and the connections drawn to the present day give the whole book a sense of genuine urgency. Highly recommended.
What makes this so compelling is how personal it feels despite the scale of the subject. Namit Arora never lets history become abstract — the human stories are always present and always moving. I learned a tremendous amount and was genuinely entertained throughout. A landmark book.
