I have read many retellings but few with this kind of clarity of vision. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni knows exactly what story they want to tell and tells it with real confidence and craft. The pacing is excellent, the descriptive writing is gorgeous, and the ending left me genuinely moved. Five stars, absolutely.
I thought I knew this story. I didn't — not the way Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni tells it. The familiar characters are here but seen through a perspective so fresh and emotionally honest that the whole thing feels new. I read it in a weekend and haven't stopped thinking about it since. Magnificent.
The Palace of Illusions is the perfect gateway for anyone who wants to explore Indian mythology but has never known where to start. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni writes with pace and passion and the story grips you from the opening pages. I have recommended this to everyone in my book club and we spent two meetings talking about it.
Indian mythology rarely gets storytelling this good. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has clearly done extraordinary research and the depth shows — not in a dry academic way but in the richness of every scene and the complexity of every character. This is the kind of book that makes you proud of the tradition it comes from.
What makes this retelling so remarkable is how human everyone feels. These are gods and heroes but Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni gives them doubt, desire, grief and joy in ways that make them feel completely relatable. An emotionally rich, beautifully written, utterly engrossing book.
