Book Summary
This classic drama collection presents six stage plays by a renowned English-language playwright, spanning sparkling comedies and more intense tragedies. The central themes explore social propriety, class snobbery, gender expectations, and the masks people wear to fit society. Designed for adult readers, theatre students, and curious readers who love witty dialogue and perceptive social commentary, the tone is clever, urbane, and entertaining.
The edition features an accessible format with introductions, contextual notes, and commentary that illuminate the social world, period conventions, and theatrical craft behind these works. The dialogue-driven storytelling is brisk and witty, with clear stage directions that invite readers to imagine performances and discuss how language reveals character.
Readers move through the collection by following sharp exchanges, surprising reversals, and social puzzles, all while considering how humor reveals truth about power, status, and identity. Though the plays traverse different settings—from drawing-room satire to more morally charged drama—the collection consistently invites reflection on disguise, hypocrisy, and the performative nature of social life.
After finishing, readers gain a deeper understanding of how theatre can illuminate human behavior, sparking curiosity, inviting discussion, and offering a lasting appreciation for dramatic literature as a mirror of society.
