About Author
Khalil Gibran is best known for his mystical writings, particularly The Prophet. Born in 1883 into a poor family in Lebanon, Khalil grew up speaking Syriac and Arabic. When Khalil was twelve, his father was sent to prison, and his family was left homeless. With his mother and family, he emigrated to the United States, where he showed promise as an artist. But after leaving school, he worked as a pedlar, until a rich benefactor paid for him to go to Paris to study painting under the famous sculptor Rodin. On his return to the States he began writing, first in Arabic and then in English. His books, which appeal to all beliefs in their expression of eternal truths, are loved by people the world over, and have been translated into twenty languages. He died in 1931.
