This book had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The way McFadden plants clues and misdirections throughout the story is masterful. I found myself trusting and then distrusting every single character which made the reading experience incredibly tense and exciting. The final twist recontextualises everything in a deeply satisfying way. One of the most compulsive reads I have picked up in years and an instant addition to my favourites shelf.
Freida McFadden has crafted a masterful psychological thriller. I was convinced I knew what was happening at least three times and I was wrong every single time. The twist at the end left me genuinely speechless. Millie is such a fascinating protagonist and the tension between her and Nina Winchester builds brilliantly throughout. The book is dark and unsettling but completely gripping. I finished it in one sitting and immediately recommended it to friends.
Freida McFadden is a genius at building suspense. Every chapter of The Housemaid ends on a hook that makes it impossible to stop reading. I read this during a long train journey and missed my stop because I was so engrossed. The themes of class, power, and desperation are woven in seamlessly. The ending is jaw-dropping and perfectly executed. A brilliant psychological thriller from start to finish. Absolutely essential reading for thriller fans.
The Housemaid is one of those rare books that makes you question every single character. The dual POV between Millie and Nina was brilliantly executed. McFadden writes with a sharp economical style that keeps the pages turning. The reveal was incredibly satisfying and I immediately wanted to discuss it with someone. A genuinely brilliant thriller that deserves all the hype it has received. I have already ordered the sequel and cannot wait to read it.
I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. The setup is deceptively simple but McFadden turns it into something truly extraordinary. The atmosphere is claustrophobic and unsettling in the best way possible. I loved how the book subverts your expectations at every turn. The writing is sharp and the pacing is perfect. One of the best thrillers I have read in years and a brilliant debut for new readers of the genre.
