The Vessel Poona Left Indian Shores And Sailed Westwards– Among Its Passengers A Seventeen-Year-Old Youth Who Had Already Gained Acclaim As A Rising Sun In Bengal's Literary And Cultural Horizon. Rabindranath Tagore Was Being Sent To England By His Family, Who Deemed His Education So Far As Having Been “Defective”, To Become A Respectable Barrister Or, In Another View, A Civil Servant.

Civil Service Or The Bar, Whichever Might Have Been The Objective Of This First Visit To Europe, It Was An Undertaking In Which Young Rabi Failed Superlatively!

As The Poet Himself Remarked Later In His Inimitable Style:

“বিলেতে গেলেম, বারিস্টর হই নি। জীবনের গোড়াকার কাঠামোটাকে নাড়া দেবার মতো ধাক্কা পাই নি, নিজের মধ্যে নিয়েছি পূব–পশ্চিমের হাত মেলানো—আমার নামটার মানে পেয়েছি প্রাণের মধ্যে।” I Went To England But I Never Became A Barrister. I Did Not Feel The Drive That Could Shake The Essential Framework Of My Life, I Have Simply Absorbed The Confluence Of The East With The West Within Me– I Have Discovered The Meaning Of My Name Within My Soul.

In The Bargain, However, Bengal Was Blessed With Some Of The Finest Prose In Bengali Literature, Mainly In The Form Of Letters And Journals—Chronicling The Young Tagore’S Everyday Experiences In England And Later On, In Other Countries. The Autobiographical Jeebansmriti, Too, Bears Accounts Of This Maiden Visit, For Instance, The Sections “বিলাত” In A Foreign Land, Or “বিলাতি সংগীত” Western Music.

Manjira’S Passion Lies In Music, And She Has Scripted And Conducted Musical Presentations Based On Rabindra Sangeet. Her Other Passion Is Translating The Bard Into English, For Those Of His Admirers Who Can Read Him Only Through The English Language. Rabindranath Tagore Was A Nobel Laureate For Literature (1913) As Well As One Of Indias Greatest Poets And The Composer Of Independent Indias National Anthem, As Well As That Of Bangladesh. He Wrote Successfully In All Literary Genres, But Was First And Foremost A Poet, Publishing More Than 50 Volumes Of Poetry. He Was A Bengali Writer Who Was Born In Calcutta And Later Traveled Around The World. He Was Knighted In 1915, But Gave Up His Knighthood After The Massacre Of Demonstrators In India In 1919. Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) Was A Painter, Philosopher, Playwright, Musician And Social Reformer, In Addition To Being A Poet And Writer. He Was Instrumental In Reshaping Bengali Writing, Music And Indian Art In Theate Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries. He Became The First Non- European To Receive The Nobel Prize Initerature For His Famous Collection Of Poems, Gitanjali. Tagore Was Referred To As ‘The Poet Of Bengal’, And Also Went By The Names Gurudev And Biswakabi. Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) Was The Fourteenth Son Of Debendranath Tagore And Sarada Devi, And Started Writing Early In His Life. He Joined The Swadeshi Movement Against The British In The 1900S. He Won The Nobel Prize For Literature In 1913, And Used His Earnings To Partly Fund His School And University, Visva-Bharati In Santiniketan. His Influence On Bengali Culture Extends Far Beyond His Highly Regarded Poetry And Prose, Into Music, Visual Art, And Theatre. Arunava Sinha Translates Classic, Modern, And Contemporary Bengali Fiction And Non-Fiction From Bangladesh And India Into English. He Also Translates Fiction From English Into Bengali. Over Seventy Of His Translations Have Been Published So Far In India, The Uk, And The Usa. He Has Won India’S Top Translation Prize, The Crossword Award For Translated Books, Twice. He Teaches At Ashoka University, Where He Is Also The Co-Director Of The Ashoka Centre For Translation, And Is The Books Editor At Scroll.In.
